Technically this painting was loads of fun to make. Working in layers, relatively careless brushstrokes, splashing on thinned paint, layering color washes to model the water splash, and then finally, the alla prima sinking stone. I liked it so much, I put up a tutorial here.
Metaphorically this painting fuses a common theme. Many years ago, when I was discovering my first love, I dreamed a stone falling through crystal clear waters. Every twist and turn the stone made as it sank was completely lucid. "Sink like a stone that's been thown in the ocean, my logic has drown in a sea of emotion." How deep will the stone fall? How clear the water?
